A Study on Relationship Between Perceived Family Support and Self-care Agency in Hemodialysis Patients

Abstract
This study was designed to identify the relationship between perceived family support and self-care agency in adults with hemodialysis patients.
The subjects for this study were the 103 hemodialysis patients and they were receiving treatments at three hospitals in Seoul and Suwon from August 2 to August 27 in 1999. This study is designed to provide basic data of identifying nursing care plans based on comprehensive nursing by examining correlations between perceived family support and self-care agency of hemodialysis patients.
The instruments used for this study were the family support scale made by Kang(1985). And the instrument the self-care agency was measured by the Self-as Carer Inventory that has been developed by Geden & Taylor(1988) and translated by So(1992).
The data were analyzed by descritive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The results of this study were as follows
1. The mean score of the subject¢¥s perceived family support was 3.56 and self-care agency 4.47.
2. The first hypothesis that the higher perceived family support is, the higher self-care agency is in hemodialysis patients was supported(r= .3428, P< .001).
3. The second hypothesis that self-care agency in hemodialysis patients will differ from partial general characteristics was partially supported; educational level(F= 3.16, p< .01), occupation(t- 2.21, p< .05), economic level(F= 5.69, p< .01), and marital status(F= 2.65, p< .05). 4. In addition analyses, there were significant associations between perceived family support and age(F= 2.94, p< .05), religion(t= -2.02, p< .05), economic level(F= 4.17, p< .01), family support offer(F= 2.74, p< .05).
In conclusion, this study revealed that perceived family support in hemodialysis patients may be an improtment factor that can improve their self-care agency.
